It’s YouTube but not as you know it

Last week I mentioned how I’ve started to get into watching YouTube videos when I’m chilling out and I thought I’d share a few favourites with you.  They’re a quirky mix of creative folk who I think have done a pretty good job at making their own little piece of the internet nice and cosy.

I love a good fashion or beauty blog – or in this case, vlog – as much as the next person but at times they can come over like a bit of a sales pitch.  I love Louise Pentland aka Sprinkle of Glitter‘s channel who chats to you like you’re a pal and has a lot of fun making her videos with her wee girl Darcy and her friends.  I am obsessed with the song she’s featured in this one – I dare you not to tap your toes as you watch!

Fran Meneses, or Frannerd as she’s known online, is a Chilean illustrator who lives with her husband and two cats in beautiful Berlin.  She makes videos in Spanish and English (with subtitles) and they’re a good mix of illustration and career advice along with various escapades with her family in tow.  I really enjoy watching YouTubers take their camera outside of their bedroom and show you their city.  It’s a great way to learn about places that might be worth visiting in the future.

If you’re into DIY but tight on time then Miss Kris ought to be your go-to guru.  With tutorials around fashion, hosting and homewares she has a stack of ideas that take next to no time to make but definitely give you the WOW factor.  I really fancy giving her latest video a go – DIY Glitter Ombre Heels – and I am keeping my eyes peeled for a second hand baby changing table to make into the best bar cart you’ve ever seen.

The newest to my subscription list is Irish native Hazel Hayes aka Chewing Sand who combines two of my favourite things – a good yarn and a wee tipple. Her Tipsy Talk series is hilarious and a grown up departure from the mélange of saccharine-sweet collaboration videos that YouTube initially became popular for.  This Tipsy Talk is between Hazel and her mum Helen and it made me laugh, cry a little and recall not so different conversations with my own mum.

CALLING ALL THE SINGLE LADIES!  Hands up who has a horror story (or seven – no judging) thanks to Tinder?  Fear not, help is at hand in the form of a real-world dating expert: stand-up Luisa Omielan.  Follow Luisa’s handy guide to snaring a man and, importantly, avoiding a restraining order… kind of.  Comedy gold!

Remember the folks who played Gotye’s ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ on Ellen?  Well, those guys (and gal) ain’t no one hit wonders.  Walk Off The Earth have an enormous online following and, in addition to their tours, they regularly upload their own spin on our favourite tunes.  Their channel is great when you fancy a sing-song while you’re making the tea.  I’ve been humming this one (on repeat) of late.

What are your favourite YouTube channels?  Leave your recommendations in the comment box below.

See you on Wednesday!
