Welcome to the first instalment of #TwoMinuteTricks! I love a spot of arts and crafts at the weekend but don’t necessarily have as much time to spare as I would like so quick and easy craft sessions allow me to satisfy my handmade cravings without taking time I don’t have to spare.
#DearMe: A letter to my future self
In the run up to and in the wake of International Women’s Day – 8th March – various social media outlets encouraged their users to create videos or write letters containing pearls of wisdom they would share with their younger selves. Alas, I missed the boat to get involved with that but it got me thinking. I don’t much see the point in writing to a me who no longer exists and everyone knows that when an older person tries to impart wisdom on the yoof of today their words will be met with an earnest nod and a large pinch of salt. Youth is the time for making mistakes and learning lessons; for seeing the good in everything and for muddling through the trials and tribulations that bring us crashing into adulthood.
Before my cup half full of innocence sours from experience – so dramatic! – I thought I might harness what youthful exuberance I’ve clung onto and write a note to the future me. It’s a bit personal, I hope that’s ok. Fingers crossed it won’t make you as red-faced reading it as I felt writing it. Here goes…
The best pancake recipe for a lazy weekend brunch
The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed something of a radio silence from the blog these past few weeks. At the beginning of the month I celebrated my birthday and welcomed a bit of a nasty virus that took up the whole first week of my new year so I’ve been playing catch up ever since. My apologies! I hope this delicious recipe will go a little way to making up for the lack of posts in this timeframe!
I found the basic pancake recipe in time for Shrove Tuesday and have been tweaking and trialling it since to make it work better for me. The pancakes you get are quite thin and the batter is quite watery but the results are finger-licking good. I hope you enjoy eating them as much as we have in our house!
READY, STEADY, BAKE: Norwegian Spiced Chocolate Cake
I first came across this recipe at the beginning of last year when I followed the heady scent of cinnamon buns to the Truman Brewery for Nordicana. While there I picked up Norwegian – American Food Anthropologist Signe Johansen’s book, Scandilicious. This was the first recipe from the book that I had tried and the video documents the first time I tried it. It was a great success so I’m henceforth marking it as my fail safe go-to when there’s a celebration to be had!
Film Review: Raw, visceral and just my tempo
Just over a week ago I went to see a film that affected me so deeply I think I’ve only just begun to process it now. It left me sweaty-palmed and short of breath. As the final credits rolled to a halt I was so restless I couldn’t bring myself to take the Tube home so I marched/ran home from Leicester Square, my heart racing with every step. Never before have I had such a physical reaction to a film. As I write this JK Simmons has just picked up a BAFTA for his role as Best Supporting Actor and deservedly so.
